What Is Craft Distilled Bourbon?
The word “Craft Distilled Bourbon” gets thrown around a lot in the whiskey industry. It’s an umbrella term for a newer distiller with a different philosophy about how to run a business, and how to make whiskey. And it also refers to a spirit that’s been distilled in smaller barrels, and made with a higher percentage of rye or corn than a traditional, large-scale bourbon.

But what is craft bourbon, exactly? There’s no official definition, and most people can use the term as they see fit. Some would consider any small, independent bourbon distillery that uses local ingredients to be craft, while others have very specific criteria for what makes something a craft whiskey.
Ultimately, it’s all about the flavor and quality of a whisky that matters. And with more and more small-scale distillers stepping up to the plate, this is a very good time for people who love bourbon.
Our team recently traveled to Kentucky to visit Limestone, the newest stop on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail (which differs from the larger Kentucky Bourbon Trail by focusing on small-scale distillers). They were kind enough to give us a taste of this bourbon, their first offering. It’s bottled at 82.2 proof and is meant as a gateway bourbon to pull in new customers.
